Goals of the Project – Philosophical Upcycling

Philosophical Upcycling aims to explore how philosophy can critically and creatively engage with the challenges and transformations brought about by digital technologies and artificial intelligence. Rather than merely reapplying traditional theories, the project seeks to revitalize and reinterpret philosophical ideas in response to the conditions of the digital age.

The project’s goal is not academic isolation but active contribution to interdisciplinary conversations. By offering clear and accessible reflections, it invites both experts and the public to rethink how digitalization reshapes human existence, agency, autonomy, and societal structures.

Philosophical Upcycling also questions the dominance of Western frameworks by integrating non-Western thought systems, such as Shinto and animist perspectives. These alternatives open up new ways of understanding the hybrid, fluid, and often ambiguous nature of digital life.

At its core, the project functions as a philosophical workshop—using inherited concepts not as static truths, but as dynamic tools. It aims to support a more reflective, imaginative, and responsible engagement with digital realities.
